Project Sith PC case #2
« on: December 08, 2011, 07:00:16 PM »

Since Willie was nice enough to purchase the first one i decided to build myself one as well. Instead of building the case the exact same i am going to build it slightly different to satisfy my water cooling needs. So please follow along and i will post pics and descriptions as the build comes along.

Also the new box of goodies showed up today, the new case showed up Tuesday so the build begins! Damn cat seems to get in every pic she can, what an attention whore.

For my personal Sith case i am going water cooling. I will not be using the dual 120mm front fans like i did for the first build. I will be utilizing the stock corsair 200mm fan in the front of the case with some slight subtle lighting changes. Looks orange in the pics but in the case they look red.

This was really not that easy. The wires are small so soldering the new led's into place took some time but i would say it took me as long to solder up the first one as it did to do the other 3.

Here is a mock up of where the lower radiator will be. Intake holes will be drilled through the bottom of the case and screens used to keep dust out. This radiator will be in it's own cooling loop to take care of the heat the graphics card/cards put out. With the 200mm fan in the front as intake and these (2) 120mm fans on the radiator as intake it will create a positive pressure case so no dust will be able to get in, hopefully.

Those Phobya fans look pretty slick.  I hadn't noticed them in the first build.

I shipped your case out today so you will see first hand how they look and perform.

Hey what do you know? I ran across my first issue with the new build. Turns out the stock 200mm corsair fans are real noisy. Although they don't seem noisy in open air i am wondering if it is because of the meshing in front of the case causing the noise. At this point i have 2 options. Cut away the meshing to see if it stops the noise or do the dual 120mm set up like in build #1. Problem is if i cut out all the meshing i will loose the mounting points for the 120mm fans.

I also notice that the front fan is a brighter red than the 2 phobya fans on the radiator, not sure if i like this. Time to pull it all apart and check other options.

Well i did a little detective work and some trial and no error to come to the conclusion that if i removed all the mesh off the case in front of the fan that it would get rid of the noise. It worked! Problem solved.

Updated pics of radiator placement and cuts that where made to make everything fit. With the 360mm radiator on top i will loose use of the top bay but should still have enough room for a fan controller in that location if i decide not to use the one corsair supplied that's adapted into the top of the case. In any event i usually only use i bay anyway for my optical drive.

With the 240mm radiator going in on the bottom it means i can only use 1 hard drive tray but who needs more than 3 hard drives anyway?

You only need three hard drive bays?  And you call yourself a hardcore gamer, ha!  You pansy!  Everyone knows real gamers have at least 5 hard drives.

That would be 3 normal drives! I am sure i could find ample space for SSD's anywhere in the case. But who can afford very many of those things?

Got the new MB today for the new build. Looks like there will be some clearance issues with how i have the upper radiator mounted. I will be exploring other mounting options to make things work. Don't think it will be to hard:)

Well with some of the clearance issues i was looking to have with the radiator and the MB and 4 pin power connector i tried a couple of things. The first was to notch the radiator so the power connector could plug into the MB with no issues. I didn't like the looks of this so i went a different route. It required some more cutting on the case, some more plastic trimming on the top plastic piece and for clearance issues i had to modify the top vent mesh to clear the radiator. Here are some updated pics.

It's really coming along. Is the radiator outside of the case now?  looks like it in that picture.

Yea if you pop the top grill on your case Willie you will see fans on the top of the case. With the new set up there is now a radiator in that spot with the fans pushing air through it from the inside of the case. The only issue with this is the fact that when fans push air though a radiator it makes more air noise than when they pull it through the radiator. The difference may be 2 to 3 db when the fans are at full speed. it's nothing i am really going to hear but something to note.
